Collard greens side dish recipe
Collard greens have a wonderful flavor, but we decided to infuse these sauteed collard greens with onion, garlic, and hot sauce to give them an extra kick of heat – leave the hot sauce if you are not fond of it. This collard greens recipe ticks all the right boxes – vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, low in carbs, and yet as flavourful as possible. Plus, it gets a hearty high-five from the keto crowd. Remember, eating healthier doesn’t have to mean sacrificing flavor or convenience.
How to cook collard greens
The method to cook collard greens is very easy: There is no need for lengthy boiling or steaming with this quick and easy recipe for braised collard greens! Rinse the collard greens with cold running water. Cut the stem out of each leaf, run the knife on each side along the stalk, then chop the leaves.
Add onion and garlic to the pot and cook until tender and fragrant. Add the chopped collard greens, vegetable broth, and seasonings to the pot. Simmer until the collard greens are very tender. Stir in the hot sauce, and BAM – Easy!

Directions
1.To make the sauteed collard greens with onion: Heat oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Addthe chopped onion, and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic, salt, and pepper, then cook for 30 seconds until the garlic is fragrant.
2. Add the chopped collard greens to the Dutch oven and cook for 3 minutes or until collard greens are wilted. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
3. Reduce the heat to a low simmer, then cover the Dutch oven and let steam the collard greens for 5 minutes or until collard greens are tender. Stir in the hot sauce and cook for 5 minutes to reduce the sauce. Sprinkle with red chili pepper flakes, if you like.

Tips for the collard greens recipe
- The collard greens can be cleaned and prepped three days before. Pat dry and keep them in an airtight container or a releasable bag in your refrigerator.
- You can make this side dish more substantial by adding crispy bacon!
How do you keep the collard greens leftovers?
Keep the collard greens in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave with a few drops of water to loosen the sauce. We do not recommend freezing the collard greens because they will be super soggy when thawed!
