Inmate Digital Mail

  • What is digital mail?
  • Digital mail is your original postal mail that is scanned and delivered straight to the inmate’s secured tablet.


  • What units are included in this program?
  • All units are included in this program.


  • How do I address a letter to an inmate?
  • All general inmate mail must be addressed using the inmate’s commitment full name, TDCJ number, and unit of assignment to the digital mail processing center for scanning and electronic distribution.

  • What if I don’t write the inmate number or their full name on the envelope?
  • The mail will be returned to the sender.

  • Where should legal, media, or special correspondence be sent?
  • Legal, media, or special correspondence should be sent to the unit of assignment.


  • Can I send as much digital mail as I would like?
  • Yes!


  • How quickly will my loved one receive my mail?
  • Mail will be available within three business days.


  • What if my loved one doesn’t have a tablet?
  • Inmates who do not have a tablet will receive black and white printed copies of their correspondence.


  • Will my loved one always have access to digital mail received during incarceration?
  • Yes! A major benefit of our new digital mail program is that all mail is stored and accessible to your loved one to permanently enjoy.


  • What will be accepted for scanning?
  • Only written correspondence, greeting cards, drawings, and photos will be accepted for scanning.


  • What will not be accepted for scanning?
  • Legal mail; media mail; and books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified publishers should be sent to the unit.


  • When can greeting cards be sent?
  • With our new digital mail program, greeting cards can be sent at any time!


  • Can packages be sent to the digital mail processing center?
  • No, they will be returned to sender. Packages should be sent to the unit.


  • Where do veterans, Social Security, and disability checks get sent?
  • These checks should be sent directly to the unit.


  • What happens to my mail once it arrives at the digital mail processing center?
  • All incoming and outgoing correspondence is subject to delivery, inspection, and rejection. Scanned mail is stored for 90 days before professional disposal. Should senders wish to receive their physical mail back after scanning, they should include a self-addressed stamped envelope in their correspondence.


  • Is there a cost to me or my loved one for this service?
  • No!


  • Do the inmates know about the digital mail service?
  • Yes!


  • What if I have additional questions?
  • You can get 24-hour, 7 days a week, and 365-day support by calling Securus® Customer Service at (800) 844-6591.


  • What is the address to the Digital Mail Processing Center?
  • All U.S. Mail sent to the Digital Mail Processing Center should be addressed as follows:

    Texas Department of Criminal Justice
    Inmate’s Full First and Last Name + TDCJ Number
    PO Box 660400
    Dallas, TX 75266-0400


  • Where should mail from businesses, organizations, and government agencies be sent?
  • This mail can be sent to the unit of assignment.


  • Where should I send a document that requires an inmate signature?
  • This should be sent to the inmate through the unit’s Law Library. The envelope should be addressed as follows:

    Inmate Name, TDCJ #
    c/o Law Library
    Unit Address

    The envelope should include only the form and any instructions on how to complete the form or where to send the form. All other content inside the envelope will be denied. The inmate will complete and sign the form in the presence of the law librarian. The original signed form shall be returned to the sender in a stamped, addressed envelope provided by the inmate, or if the inmate is indigent, provided by TDCJ. The law librarian may provide one copy of the signed document to the inmate for the inmate’s records. If the inmate refuses to sign the document, a copy of the unsigned document will be provided to the inmate, and the law librarian will return the original document and envelope to the mailroom for disposition.


  • What if I want the original copies of the general correspondence back after it is scanned?
  • Scanned mail is stored for 90 days before professional disposal. Should senders wish to receive their physical mail back after scanning, they should include a self-addressed stamped envelope in their correspondence.
